Miguel
REELING MACHINE MANAGER
After receiving my secondary diploma in science, I completed the two-year paper-making training course in Gérardmer. I specialised in maintenance and did a work-study programme at Papeteries de Clairefontaine in the mechanics shop. I worked in that department for about eight years before I became a multi-skilled technician on the paper machine, and then a Foreman for twelve years. In 2020, I decided to give up shift work and applied for a job as Reeling Machine Manager, with an option to work on the development and installation of the new packaging line. All total, I have been an employee here for 26 years.
In this job, my role is to work in close coordination with the different departments–in particular with Production, because my work involves the reeling at the end of the process–and with Finishing and Shipping. My responsibilities also include management activities, continuous improvement, overseeing raw materials (spools, cardboard, etc.) and, on a more practical level, troubleshooting when it proves necessary.
My day usually begins with a discussion with the work teams, and then meetings about the performance of the paper machines. I also have discussions with the Technical Departments. Then I take care of the orders for consumables and I also work on the preventive maintenance phases. Once a month, I also participate in discussions about the future assignments of staff members, and assessments of temp workers.
The biggest challenge I had when I started this job was familiarising myself with the operating procedures of our reeling machines and our integrated management suite, SAP. Another big challenge was to train all our employees on the new packaging machine.
Teamwork counts a lot for me, and I really enjoy working with my colleagues on a daily basis. Advice I would give to younger workers is to really throw themselves into their work and become multi-skilled. Having multiple skills allows you to perform different activities here at the site, but also broadens your knowledge on a personal level. You shouldn’t be too hesitant: learning new things is always positive!
